Basic Leader Training comprises of two parts: New Leader Essentials for all unit-level leaders and Leader Specific training, which is based on the leader's unit-level position. It is designed for maximum flexibility. The sessions can be delivered over time—training on one or more evenings a week or month—or in a one-day training event that incorporates all program areas. It is suitable for large or small groups and may be presented to leaders of one or more units each time. Keep in mind that the focus is to remove roadblocks and achieve 100 percent trained leaders.

New Leader Essentials
New Leader Essentials is an introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. Videos, discussions, and hands-on reinforcement are presented during the 60-90 minute training session. Ideally, all unit-based volunteers—Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturing leaders—take this session at the same time, so they understand that they are all striving for the same results with the youth they serve. Each leader completes New Leader Essentials training only once.

Benefits of New Leader Essentials
1. Assistance in implementing the full Scouting program with chartered organizations

2. A better understanding of the advantages of encouraging youth and adult volunteers to move through the traditional program as their youth mature

3. An awareness of the different aspects of the Scouting program, which may result in leaders taking advantage of those programs for a child in a different age group
Leader Specific Training

Once a volunteer has a solid overview of the BSA's values-based program, he or she can begin training for a specific Scouting position through Leader Specific training. This training provides the specialized knowledge a new leader needs to assume a leadership role. Because each course is designed for a specific leadership position, the training time varies. Leader Specific training has been developed for the following positions and their assistants:

• Tiger Cub den leaders
• Cub Scout den leaders
• Webelos den leaders
• Cubmasters
• Pack committee members
• Scoutmasters
• Troop committee members
• Venturing committee members
• Venturing Advisors

Cub Scout Leader Specific Training
Tiger Cub den leaders, Cub Scout den leaders, Webelos den leaders, Cubmasters, and pack committee members can complete this training. Courses covers organization, planning, and implementing den and pack  program; safety; and handy tips from experienced Scouters.  As a result, Cub Scouts receive a program designed to achieve Scouting's aims of citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness. Takes about 2.5-3 hours to complete.

Boy Scout Leader Specific Training
Trained Boy Scout Leaders provide a program based on life skills education, leadership development, citizenship, and values training. Its unique methods of program presentation are designed to help build youth with strong character who are physically fit and prepared to be good citizens. For Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters, this training is divided into four parts. The first three parts concentrate on troop operation and can be completed in one full day or three evenings. Each part lasts 2.5 hours each. The fourth part, which focuses on outdoor skills, lasts approximately a day and a half.

For troop committee members, Leader Specific training includes the Troop Committee Challenge. By following the Troop Committee Training Syllabus, participants can complete the challenge in three hours, after which they are considered trained.

Venture Leader Specific Training
Developed for Venturing Advisors, assistant Advisors, and crew committee members, this training introduces the new adult crew leader to Venturing by providing basic information needed to successfully operate a crew. This information includes the purpose and mission of Venturing; characteristics of Venture-aged youth; organization and leadership of the crew; and program planning and officer training. Course usually takes about 5 hours.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills
Outdoor skills are critical to the success of the Scouting program, and Introduction to Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Training will provide leaders with the basic outdoor skills information needed to start a program right.

Introduction to Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Training is the required outdoor training for all Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and Varsity Scout Coaches. The skills taught are based on the outdoor skills found in The Boy Scout Handbook. The course is also ideal for Venturing leaders because it focuses on skills that build confidence and competence in leaders conducting outdoor camping experiences.

Supplemental
These are sessions that help leaders obtain new ideas for their unit programs.

Wood Badge for the 21st Century
Wood Badge has evolved into the core leadership skills training course for the BSA. The new Wood Badge course focuses on strengthening every volunteer's ability to work with and lead groups of youth and adults and is less focused on outdoor skills, which are more effectively addressed in other courses.
