Have you been wondering who cuts the firewood or who helps with physical improvements or who helps with the opening of camp? Want to complete a project that you can say proudly, "I helped with that"?
Make this Camp yours by helping out for a day or two.
Last Weekends in June, September and October have been set aside for Scouters to converge on Camp Hiawatha and work on camp projects. For details: Download Letter. For more information, email
Gary Olson or
Joe Erickson or contact the
Scout Service Center.
Family cabins and staff cabins will be made available free, on a first come-first served basis, for all who come to work. Each of the new staff cabins has four bunks. Please provide your own food and refreshments. Youth under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Youth protection guidelines apply.
Projects That Need to be Done
• Finish painting the Health Lodge.
• Outside of staff cabins need paint.
• Exterior of Family Cabins need paint.
• Pedestals for sheepherder stoves need to be installed on some patrol sites (need to be set in concrete).
• Family side cabins need paint.
• Benches need to be set at the site of the new fire ring on the family side.
• Some cleanup is needed in and around the butler building on the family side.
• Chips need to be spread on trails.
• Firewood needs to be split for sheepherder stoves and for sale.
Equipment and Supply Needs
• Office supplies and equipment.
• A riding lawn mower suitable to the size of the area to be cut.
• A tractor, preferably with a loader, brush hog, snow blower and dump trailer, would greatly enhance our ability to keep camp in tip top shape.
• Making firewood is an ongoing effort, and chain saws and another log splitter would help greatly.
• The camp pickup trucks are becoming aged and may soon have to be removed from service for safety reason. A good 2 or 4 wheel drive unit phased in now would help.
• The campsite entrance poles, etc., seem to be needing replacement on a regular basis. Sites 4 and 7 need replacing immediately. A dozen telephone poles on hand would be very helpful.
• A dump trailer to fit behind a pickup truck or tractor would enhance many small projects.
• And, of course, money.
You may find other items that would be beneficial to Camp and/or the Council. Rope comes to mind. The above are just some of the more critical needs that have been identified. Again, please clear any donations with those mentioned above.
Wishes to be of service to Camp at some other time is welcome, and should coordinate access and projects with Joe Erickson.
